How to Replace Yale Lock Batteries

If you receive a Smart Lock - Low Battery ticket either through the Chirp Admin Panel or email, you should replace the smart lock batteries within one (1) week.

To replace the batteries:

1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the battery cover from the interior side of the lock.

2. Without touching the module, replace all four (4) batteries, then listen for the Start Up sound from the lock.

3. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw using the Phillips screwdriver.

4. Using your Staff mobile app account, create a temporary Unit Key in the mobile app and lock and unlock the door a few times.

  • This step is a crucial step in order for the Smart Lock - Low Battery ticket to automatically be marked as Solved.

How to Replace a Bad Yale Module

If no users (staff or residents) are able to connect to the smart lock with the mobile app, the Yale Module may be faulty and will need to be replaced with a brand-new module. To replace a module, you will need to:

1. Rename the Bad Module and Program a New Module

In the Chirp mobile app:

1. Download the Chirp Access mobile app: https://www.chirpsystems.com/app.

2. If your property is using the STRATIS mobile app, log into the Chirp app with your STRATIS account and email and create a Chirp password.

3. Tap on the “” in the bottom menu.

4. Under the Staff Dashboard, tap Home Access Management.

5. Select the property and then Units.

6. Select the unit number and tap the name of the lock.

7. Tap the pencil icon next to the name of the lock and then Other.

8. Rename the lock by appending (OLD) to the original name of the lock.
Example: Front Door > Front Door (OLD).

9. Tap Save.

10. Next, program the new module by tapping Add Module to this Unit.

11. Scan the Serial Number barcode on the module box or on the new module itself (the barcode on the box works better for iPhones). Alternatively, manually input the Serial Number.

12. Select or input the original name of the door, then tap Save. A green success banner message will display indicating that the module is provisioned.

13. Follow the steps below to factory reset the lock (2. Factory Reset the Lock).

2. Factory Reset the Lock

IMPORTANT: You will only need to factory reset the lock if you do not know the master code of the lock. If you know the master code, insert the module, then enter the master code and tap gear, 7, gear, 3, gear. Then, skip to section 4. Email STRATIS Support below.

1. Locate the smart lock.

2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the battery cover from the interior side of the lock.

3. Remove the far left and far right batteries from your lock to power it off. Wait approximately 10 seconds for the lock to fully power down.

4. Remove the old module and then insert the new module with the Yale logo facing up. Make sure it is properly seated in the lock.

5. Remove screws beneath the far right and far left batteries.

6. Remove the screw at the very bottom of the lock.

7. Remove the interior side of the lock to access the reset button (photo below). The reset button is located beside the PCB cable connector.

8. While pressing the reset button (for a minimum of 3 seconds), reinstall the batteries.

9. Open the door so you can see the front of the lock. Once the lock starts cycling through keypad numbers, release the reset button and replace the battery cover and screws.

10. Follow the steps below to register the new module with the smart lock (3. Register the New Module with the Smart Lock).

3. Register the New Module with the Smart Lock

1. Place the back of your hand over the touchscreen to wake it up and tap the gear key.

2. Set an 8-digit master PIN code. Use the code generator in the Chirp Access app under the Staff Dashboard to generate random pin codes to use for the master code. This code should not be written down nor shared. Do not use the same master code for all locks on your property.

3. Tap the gear button to finish.

4. Place the palm of your hand over the lock’s keypad to begin the handing process.

5. Enter the master code followed by the gear key.

6. Tap 7, tap gear key, tap 3, then the gear key.

7. Follow the steps below to verify Bluetooth operation of the lock (4. Test Bluetooth Operation of the Lock).

IMPORTANT: FACTORY RESETTING THE LOCK WILL WIPE ALL PIN CODES FROM THE LOCK. You will need to instruct the current residents to recreate their PIN codes on their lock.

4. Test Bluetooth Operation of the Lock

IMPORTANT: This step is absolutely CRITICAL for proper lock functionality.

In the Chirp Access Mobile App:

1. Under the Staff Dashboard, tap Create Unit Key.

2. Select the property and the unit.

3. Select a Duration, Purpose: Smart Lock Provisioning, and tap Create Unit Key.

4. Test the lock by locking and unlocking the door several times with the Chirp app to verify proper functionality and installation with the door frame.

5. Follow the steps below to email STRATIS (5. Email STRATIS Support).

5. Email STRATIS Support

Send a quick email to support@stratisiot.com with the property and unit number of the swapped module. STRATIS will transfer all historical data from the old module to the new module and permanently delete the old module from our system.
